It was a good showing for local '10s in the USHL Phase 1 Draft. In all, 25 New Englanders were picked in the 15-round draft on Monday night.
The Waterloo BlackHawks had the first pick and selected Chicago Mission defenseman Evan Miller, who had good showings at the U.S. National Team Development Program Evaluation Camp in March.
Of the 15 first-round picks, 11 were taken up by tenders. So only Waterloo, the Lincoln Stars, Chicago Steel and Dubuque Fighting Saints made first-round picks.
Milton Academy forward Blake Wilichoski (Danvers, Mass.) tendered with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, while St. Mark's defenseman Logan Cotter (Marlboro, Mass.) tendered with the Green Bay Gamblers. Those were the two locals who tendered.
The first local off the board was Cushing forward Owen Frick, taken in the fourth round by the Omaha Lancers. Frick was a standout with the Minuteman Flames in the fall and had 11 points in 33 games with Cushing in prep. Later in the fourth round, Rivers forward Carter Felt (Natick, Mass.), Framingham High forward Colin Walsh (Framingham, Mass.), St. Sebastian's forward Jameson Needham (Woburn, Mass.) and Dexter Southfield forward Austin Wu (Dedham, Mass.) were picked.
