Quite a few New Englanders were picked in the USHL Phase 2 Draft on Tuesday. In all, 16 locals between the 2007 and 2009 birth years were selected.
Phase 1, which was for 2010-born players only, was on Monday night. Twenty-five locals were picked.
The Fargo Force had the first pick of the draft and took U.S. National Team Development Program forward Aurelio Garcia, an '08 committed to Notre Dame.
Choate forward and Yale commit Greg Najda went off the board early, getting snagged by the Lincoln Stars with the fourth pick. The Ontario native had 24 points in 26 games for Choate this winter after a strong fall with the Yale Junior Bulldogs.
The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders took the first local with Lawrence Academy defenseman Matas Janulis (Lincoln, Mass.). At 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds, Janulis is a two-way threat who has a phenomenal stick and is a stable, reliable defenseman. He was a junior who posted 16 points in 27 games as a junior this winter.
A big local name taken early was NTDP forward Jamie Glance. The Stratham, N.H., native is committed to Boston University and had a huge season with the NTDP, posting 56 points in 62 games.
Thayer forward Tommy Wilkinson (Duxbury, Mass.), South Kent forward Stephan Rezvyi (South Kent, Conn.) and Mount St. Charles forward Cole Sabourin (Cumberland, R.I.) were all picked in the third round.
A slew of locals and current and former prep players were picked throughout the draft.
