Everybody can breathe now.
As of April 27, the men's college hockey transfer portal is closed. It opened on April 13 to an onslaught of players entering and changing jerseys. Most of the mad dash was contained to the first couple of days.
Some of that was players feeling the grass was greener elsewhere. For many, however, they were pushed out by their current teams.
This year's transfer portal featured plenty of activity, especially among local teams, which we tracked here. A handful of New England natives were active in it, too.
Let's dive into the biggest takeaways from the transfer portal.
UNH got Malte Vass, Ryan Johnson and Rasmus Svartström
New Hampshire was the most active local team in the portal, having 11 players enter and adding six to next year's roster.

Vass is the big name, as he was picked in the third round of the 2025 NHL Draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets. At 6-foot-3 and 194 pounds, the potential is there for him to be a do-it-all defenseman. He got buried a bit at Boston University this winter with three assists in 22 games.

Svartström, an '05, led St. Lawrence in goals (17) and ranked second on the team in points (24) this past season.
Johnson was at Alaska-Anchorage for the last two seasons. He popped as a freshman in 2024-25 with 11 goals and 25 points in 33 games before taking a step back this past winter with 15 points in 33 games.
Caeden Herrington left Vermont ...
In 2022, I did a story on Herrington scoring a "Michigan" goal in a Holderness game. Earlier that week, the Manchester, Vt., native committed to Vermont.
“I’ve always had the dream of going there,” Herrington said at the time.
Herrington, a fourth-round pick by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2025 NHL Draft, was visibly emotional after scoring his first collegiate goal.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound defenseman had a strong freshman year with a goal and eight points in 34 games for Vermont. Yet come the first day of the portal, Herrington was in and chose Penn State.
It's a big addition for Penn State and an unfortunate loss for Vermont.
... but Vermont added Dylan Silverstein
It's not all bad for Vermont. The Catamounts added Silverstein, who will undoubtedly compete for the starting job.
Silverstein handled the majority of the load in Quinnipiac's net last season over Matej Marinov. This season, Marinov was in the net a bit more. Still, Silverstein was an effective, consistent presence in net for Quinnipiac over the last two seasons with a 2.25 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage in 2024-25, and a 2.09 GAA and a .912 save percentage this winter.
Northeastern added Miguel Marques from Maine
As a freshman at Maine, Marques ranked fourth in points with 23. The '06 was a third-round pick by the Nashville Predators in 2024. He's 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, and should be a welcome addition to the Huskies' top six.
Justin Poirier left Maine
Poirier was a revelation for Maine this winter. As a freshman, he led Maine in goals (18) and ranked third in points (29). The fifth-round pick by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2024 was dominant for the QMJHL's Baie-Comeau Drakkar from 2022-25. He's headed to Penn State.

Sacred Heart got the Buttazzoni brothers
Mirko Buttazzoni, an '04, was a sophomore at UMass Lowell this past season, while Diego Buttazzoni, an '06, was a freshman. Mirko had 19 points as a freshman and 13 as a sophomore, while Diego had 12 this past winter. Diego entered this season off a huge final year with the WHL's Portland Winterhawks with 77 points.
The brothers hit the portal and are heading to Sacred Heart. They project to be big-time producers for Sacred Heart next winter.
Ivan Zadvernyuk left Brown
After posting 10 points as a freshman, Zadvernyuk broke out with 22 points to lead Brown in scoring this season. The 6-foot-3, 201-pound Russian forward is headed to Cornell. Brown also lost Matt Desiderio to Dartmouth, who was tied for fifth on the team in scoring with 12 points.
Will Skahan left Boston College, but Teddy Mallgrave picked the Eagles
When Skahan arrived at BC in 2024, there was considerable hype. Earlier that year, he was taken in the second round (65th overall) by the Utah Mammoth in the NHL Draft. At 6-foot-5 and 223 pounds, he would be a force as a defensive defenseman for BC.
He posted two goals and seven points in 30 games as a freshman before only scoring once in 31 games this past season. He was scratched for certain games, and it wasn't a surprise when he entered the portal. He's slated to play for Minnesota State next season.
The Eagles added Mallgrave from St. Lawrence. While he went pointless in 11 games as a freshman at St. Lawrence, he's a 6-foot-3, 201-pound shutdown defender who had success at Kent from 2021-24.
UMass added Gavin Cornforth
Cornforth was looked at as a high-end forward in 2022 when he was a first-round pick by the USHL's Dubuque Fighting Saints. He skipped his sophomore year at Thayer to play for Dubuque, where he played for three seasons. Cornforth went to BC this season and, after 18 games, returned to juniors, playing for the QMJHL's Moncton Wildcats. He put up 12 goals and 30 points in 29 games.
The Boston native has a chance at a fresh start with UMass. The potential is there. The question is whether or not head coach Greg Carvel and Co. can get it out of him.

Atlantic Hockey losses
Forward Jack Stockfish has been a top producer for Holy Cross over the last few seasons, most recently putting up 35 points. He's headed to Quinnipiac.
At Sacred Heart, goalie Teagan Kendrick had a solid season with a 2.42 GAA and a .920 save percentage in 20 games. He's headed to UNH.
Defenseman David Helledy was the leading point-getter among Bentley defensemen with 20 this winter and transferred to Miami-Ohio.
