Four prep school hockey stars were named to the 2018 U.S. Under-18 Men’s Select Team that will compete in the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup.
The roster was selected from the players who competed at the recently-finished USA Hockey Select 17 Player Development Camp at the Northtown Center in Amherst, N.Y. The Hlinka-Gretzky Cup, formerly the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, takes place August 6-11 at the Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta and Servus Arena in Red Deer, Alberta.
The event brings together many of the world’s hockey powers in an effort to showcase the following year’s draft talent to NHL scouts and other top brass. All players in the tournament are born in 2001, the first year of eligibility for the 2019 NHL Draft.
Forwards Sam Colangelo and John Farinacci, defenseman Cade Webber, and goaltender Derek Mullahy were the four prep players who made the team.
Colangelo, a Stoneham, Mass., native, is a Northeastern recruit who plays for Lawrence Academy. Colangelo sees the ice well offensively and can fire a puck.
Farinacci is one of the more gifted offensive players in prep hockey. Originally from Chatham, N.J., he’s the nephew of Harvard head coach Ted Donato. Committed to play college hockey for the Crimson, he plays for Dan Donato’s Dexter School team.
Webber is a towering 6-foot-6 defenseman who can skate. Originally from Meadville, Pa., he moved to Massachusetts prior to his freshman year of prep school at Rivers. His father, Michael, is the head coach of the women’s soccer program at Regis College. Webber is committed to Boston University.
Mullahy, a Scituate, Mass., resident, plays at Dexter and is committed to Harvard. He’s entering his second season at the Brookline, Mass., prep school after playing at the prestigious Shattuck St. Mary’s in Faribault, Minn.
Boston University commit Robert Mastrosimone, a forward from Islip, N.Y., and the Chicago Steel, also made the team.
Simply, there were several snubs on this year's U.S. team. They didn't make Monday’s All-Star Game at the USA Hockey Select 17 Player Development Camp, then were inauspiciously left off the Hlinka roster.
