The East Haven, Conn., native de-committed from the University of Maine, switching his allegiance to the University of Connecticut. Capone informed both coaching staffs over the weekend. He committed to the Black Bears nearly three years ago.
Capone, who played the last two seasons at Salisbury, is beginning his first full season of junior hockey with the Tri-City Storm in the USHL. A late '01, Capone is a potential prospect for the 2020 NHL Draft. His best attributes are his size, physicality and ability to protect pucks and drive possession below the dots. His skating is an area of his game that could use improvement.
Messuri picks other Huskies
Arlington senior Anthony Messuri committed to Northeastern for the 2021-22 season, it was announced late last week.
Messuri played a key role as the Spy Ponders won the 2017 MIAA Super 8 Championship. A skilled forward, Messuri is playing this fall for the Cape Cod Whalers 18-U. Over the summer, he helped his team win the Hockey Night in Boston Major Showcase.
His father, John Messuri, is his coach at Arlington. The elder Messuri was a very good college hockey player in his own right at Princeton.
Beniers visits BC, Harvard
USA Hockey NTDP U-18 center Matt Beniers recently visited Boston College and Harvard as he looks to lock down where he'll play college hockey beginning next season. It's long been thought Beniers would land at one of the two schools or Boston University as he has a strong desire to stay in Boston for college.
The Hingham, Mass., native is accelerating so he can enroll in college beginning next fall. The late '02 isn't eligible until the 2021 NHL Draft. Beniers, who played his freshman season at Milton Academy before moving onto the NTDP, is considered the top uncommitted '02.
