Good reads

  • Jon DiSalvatore (South Windsor, Conn.) became the 82nd player in AHL history to reach 500 career points on Sunday.

  • Marty Brodeur thinks Roman Hamrlik is a knucklehead for speaking out about Don Fehr and the NHLPA’s leadership.

  • USA Today examines the impact the lockout is having on businesses down in Nashville, especially around Bridgestone Arena.

Quick hits

  • Brown earned a surprising 3-2 victory over Holy Cross on Sunday. Matt Ginn made 51 saves on 54 shots for the Crusaders, but that wasn’t enough. With the win, the Bears improved to 3-4-2 overall on the year. Holy Cross slips to 7-3-1. Brown was 24 hours removed from a 7-0 loss to Providence.

  • On Saturday, BC doubled up Dartmouth by a score of 6-3. Sophomore Johnny Gaudreau had a five-point night (two goals, three assists) for the Eagles, while captain Pat Mullane (Wallingford, Conn.) notched four points. Parker Milner made 29 saves as Boston College improved to 10-1-0 on the season.

History lesson

  • One year ago today, the Bruins fell behind by two goals in the first 10:10 of action against the Jets. Unfortunately for Winnipeg, Tim Thomas stopped everything from there on out, finishing with 40 saves. After a Zdeno Chara strike on the power play cut the lead to one in the first period, Chris Kelly tallied twice in the middle frame -- including a shorthanded marker -- to give Boston a 3-2 lead. Brad Marchand iced it with an unassisted empty-netter with 1:09 left in the contest.

Today on NEHJ

  • Later on this afternoon I’ll have my latest edition of the AHL Journal, recapping this past weekend’s action.

Entirely off-topic

  • Three cheers for the Toronto Argonauts, who became the 100th Grey Cup champions on Sunday. True story: I saw a CFL game in 2006 up in Toronto. Ricky Williams – during his NFL hiatus – scored a touchdown for the Argos.
