Good reads

  • Negotiations are at a standstill. The season is in jeopardy. What should the NHL and NHLPA do about it? Take a two week break, says Gary Bettman. Brilliant!

  • A Massachusetts junior hockey coach has been arrested for attempting to seduce two Florida boys.

  • Remember that funny commercial that featured Brad Marchand working at Pure Hockey? Habs defenseman P.K. Subban – who, as you’ll likely remember, fought Marchand last season – attempts to capture the same magic as an employee at Boston Pizza (a Canadian restaurant chain, I might add).

  • Good stuff from Sports Illustrated on how NHL players and teams are helping the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

  • Bob Crawford profiles Connecticut Whale forward Christian Thomas, whose father Steve scored over 400 goals during his 19-year career in the NHL.

History lesson

  • On this day in 1948, former Bruin Dave Forbed was born. The winger played in the AHL for the Boston Braves before jumping to the NHL during the 1973-74 season. In 284 games for the B’s, Forbes scored 53 goals and added 52 assists.

Today on NEHJ

  • Friday’s are always jam-packed ‘round these parts and today is no different. We’ll have Dan Guttenplan’s latest ECAC Journal, featuring Dartmouth’s surprising start, Andy Merritt weighs in on what life in Hockey East will be like for Notre Dame, and of course we’ll have our latest college power rankings.

Entirely off-topic

  • Well, this one’s going to kick you in the gut. A train plowed into a parade float carrying wounded veterans and their spouses in Texas on Thursday.
