Devils d-man Fayne may miss start of 2012-13 season

By Jesse Connolly

After asserting himself as a reliable presence on the blue line throughout New Jersey’s unexpectedly deep postseason run, the Devils may be without Mark Fayne (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) at the start of the 2012-13 season.

Fayne, 25, underwent wrist surgery last Friday. The repairing of the scapholunate ligament in his left wrist is a procedure that could sideline him for the next 3-4 months.

The 25-year-old defenseman was recently tendered a qualifying offer from the Devils, a sign New Jersey wants to retain the soon-to-be restricted free agent.

The former Providence College standout was a steady presence on the back-end for the Devils throughout the postseason, averaging 20:19 of ice time in 24 playoff contests, during which he picked up three assists and had a plus-5 rating.

In 2011-12, his second NHL season, Fayne played in all 82 games. He scored four goals and added 13 assists. For his career, he now has 8-23-31 totals in 139 games.

Fayne is coming off a two-year deal that carried a cap hit of $542,500.
