The Columbus Blue Jackets reaffirmed how big a part of their future Cam Atkinson is on Friday, signing the winger to a two-year extension.

The Greenwich, Conn., native, who has eight goals and eight assists on the season, will earn a total of $2.3 million over the contract, which runs through 2014-15. Atkinson currently carries an $875,000 cap hit on his entry-level deal. In 61 NHL games, he has 30 points.

Atkinson, now in his second pro season, was selected 157th overall in 2008. The 24-year-old forward shined during his three seasons at Boston College, scoring 30-plus goals twice and winning a national championship in 2010.

On Thursday night, Atkinson scored two goals in a 3-1 win over the Stars to keep his squad's playoff hopes alive. The Blue Jackets will face the Predators in their final regular season game on Saturday night.
