Danbury Whalers roster taking shape
The Federal Hockey League – where does it go from here? Our roving reporter, John Landers, takes a look at a minor league trying to make it:
The seeds have been planted in Connecticut for the Federal Hockey League. One of its teams will be the Danbury Whalers, slated to open on Oct. 29.
The club held a two-day mashing of local talent late last month in hopes of uncovering a home-grown diamond in the rough. Whalers head coach Chris Firriolo is impressed with what he saw.
Firriolo, always the teacher, took the time to chat with each of the 80-plus players who competed. He explained that even though they did not make the cut, the FHL is holding a late-August, league-wide free agent try out camp in Binghamton, N.Y.
Journeyman goalie Nick Neidert, who backstopped the Jersey Rockhoppers in 2008 to the only championship in EPHL history over Firriolo's powerhouse Brooklyn Aces, figures to start in goal for Danbury in year one.
The FHL will ice six teams in its first season. Anyone interested in obtaining more information can get it at the league’s new Web site, FHL.com.
