A 17-year-old captain on the Pentucket Regional High School hockey team died after collapsing on the ice at the conclusion of hockey practice in Haverhill on Tuesday.
According to the Eagle-Tribune, senior defenseman Matt McCarthy of Merrimac was treated at the scene and taken to Merrimack Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Eagle-Tribune reported that McCarthy, his fellow captains and coach Bill Burns were meeting informally at center ice after practice, as is the team’s custom, when McCarthy fell to the ice.
An autopsy was scheduled to be performed today, and the death is being investigated by the Massachusetts State Police. There are no indications that foul play was involved.
The Boston Globe reported that McCarthy’s student parking space at the high school in West Newbury was turned into a memorial, with bouquets of flowers and mementos left.
Pentucket is not scheduled to play another game until Jan. 6.
